Rose Tattoos
For many years rose tattoos have been a popular choice for both women and men alike. Once popular among sailors, particularly during times of war, tattoos of roses were a common way of honoring the wives or lovers they’ve left behind. As it became more and more acceptable for women to also get tattooed, roses, with their timeless beauty, quickly became a favorite of the fairer sex as well.
A Rosy History
In Greek mythology, it is said that all roses grew pure white until Aphrodite, the goddess of love, pricked her finger on a thorn, turning the buds bright red with her blood. Roses actually originated in the country of ancient Persia and were once thought to be a rather masculine flower, but are now usually associated with love or femininity.
The Meanings
Depending upon the color, design or placement, tattoos of roses can symbolize a wide variety of meanings.
The Color
- A red rose may indicate love, romance, or respect.
- A yellow rose may signify friendship and emotions such as joy or devotion.
- Peach roses symbolize modesty or friendship.
- White roses are a symbol of purity, innocence, and spirituality.
- Black roses, which when found in nature, are actually a very deep purple, and have come to indicate death, darkness, or evil.
The Placement
Roses can look good just about anywhere on the body, either alone or as a part of a more elaborate design. Men usually opt for roses that are intertwined around a sword, dagger, or their beloved’s name on the bicep or forearm. For women, the most popular spots are the upper or lower back, the chest, and the ankle.
Types of Rose Tattoos
Many people choose a tattoo of a rose as a way to memorialize a loved one, tattooing their name somewhere within the image of a beautiful rose. This type of rose serves as a permanent tribute or memorial and may include one or more roses along with the name or date. On the lighter side, there are those people who choose to get a tattoo of a rose as a living tribute and a way to demonstrate their love. Both parties of a couple may get the same exact tattoo, each with the other’s name, or perhaps with both names along with their wedding or other significant date. There are also parents who have chosen the tattoo of a rose as a way to symbolize their love for their children, tattooing each child’s name on a rose, adding to the “garden” as the family grows. Rose tattoos may also be designed as simple, solitary buds, or full, flowing bouquets complete with trailing vines, banners, hearts or other embellishments.
